It may feel like the holidays are already in full swing, but today is still just the first Friday in December, which means we have a few more weeks of celebrations and festivities to enjoy. If you’re already feeling burned out from holiday shopping and errands, it is not too late to reevaluate how you’re getting into the Christmas spirit.
I’m sure you’ve seen the meme going around – I know I’ve shared it at least once – that gives these three rules for holiday festivities:
Well, let’s focus on 1 & 2 for right now…
Gift giving is my favorite part of the holiday if we’re being honest. It’s not the shopping that makes me happy, but the process of picking things out for my loved ones that I know they will adore. I love to wrap presents, too, and put together a unique package with someone in mind. With that said, we are very tight for money this holiday season. It seems this whole “adult” thing is in full swing with car-payments due every month and health insurance money coming out of my paycheck before I even see it. Still, I didn’t want to let that keep this Christmas from being celebrated with as much passion and joy as ever.
Here are a few ways I’ve set this season up to be happy and bright without breaking the bank or getting caught up in the commercialized depths of it all.
1 | Gifts with intention
I’m sick of all the stuff in our house, and I’ve been throwing things away and donating all year long. I really kept that in mind when I picked gifts for everyone, and decided to MAKE most them(look forward to a post to come about my handmade DoTerra gifts!). That way the gifts are useful and consumable (ie: candles, wax melts, room sprays, etc.) If you don’t want to make things this year, here are two other ideas I love!
The Journal Deck*: This Pittsburgh-based, female-owned and run business has built a beautiful practice of pulling journaling prompts just like you would oracle cards! These decks are lush, magical and well-priced. The owner of the business is a dear friend, and when she first launched I immediately bought a deck for myself, and then 4 extra decks – one for each of my bridesmaids. She now also sells a Goddess edition deck that is full of feminine energy, and a companion journal to go with! Giving a journal deck is giving the gift of intentional and meaningful self-care! Desire Map Planner*: If you’ve been reading my blog for a while then you have read about the Desire Map, or maybe you have even read the Desire Map itself! This tool is one I rave about all the time, and its owner, Danielle Laporte, is a true guiding light in my life. Her planners are so rich and vibrant, and make mapping out the days/months/years ahead a soulful journey instead of a stressful one. She rules her life planning with one principal: HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL? And this year, the purchase of her planner comes with the Desire Map Planner Program—one year of support to help you plan your life feelings-first. Click here to shop the planner I have now!

2 | Work-appropriate holiday music
I am oh-so-guilty of jamming to holiday tunes at my desk. This time of year, I just can’t help myself. But this week I discovered a playlist on Spotify of Christmas piano music, and I am loving these mellow, festive vibes to get me through the workday. Check it out here!
3 | Take a drive to see the lights!
My husband and I love to meander through our neighborhood and some of the surrounding ones to see all the lights. Once or twice a year, we’ll make hot cocoa in to-go cups, pick a playlist for the car, and drive slowly through the streets ranking each house’s displays! To be honest, we usually use a 1-10 scale, with our house being the perfect 10 LOL! Sometimes we see someone who has really gone all out, and then we give them an 11!
4 | Holiday cards
Not everyone on your list needs a gift from you, but you may still want to wish them a happy holiday season. For the last few years, I’ve been really diligent about sending cards and it makes me so happy. It’s a chance to capture our little family on a keepsake, and then share it with our loved ones. I have a huge family, and I don’t get to see them as much as we’d like, but this way I can still be a small part of their holiday season.
5 | Diffuser blends
At work and at home, I am diffusing Holiday Joy and Holiday Peace like crazy! Holiday joy combines the smells of Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Clove with the fresh and airy scent of Siberian and Douglas Fir for a warm, inviting feeling – even in my little office. Holiday Peace is woodsy-er in my opinion, and is a combination of Siberian, Douglas, and Himalayan—complimented by Grapefruit, Frankincense, and Vetiver. If you’re interested in either, let me know!
Have some oils but not these blends? Try one of these ideas!
Nutmeg, Cinnamon & Clove – 3 drops each
Frankincense, Orange & Peppermint – 2 drops each
